Ramadan 2023: Live updates on moon sighting announcement, start date, prayers and fasting times

During Ramadan, the special month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community, millions of Muslims around the world will observe a fast from sunrise to sunset and attend special prayer services at local mosques and Islamic centres.

They will spend their days focused on prayer and spiritual reflection and thousands more will go above and beyond what is expected of them as family members, neighbours and carers to support people in need in their local communities.

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and is recognised as being the time when the Quran was first revealed to the prophet Muhammad. This revelation is known as "Laylat Al Qadar" ("Night of Power").

The beginning and end of Ramadan is determined by sightings of the moon - the first sighting of a new crescent moon, no matter how faint, marks the beginning of the holy month. Often, the holy month begins on slightly different dates around the world.

Last year, Ramadan began in the UK on Sunday, April 3. This year, religious leaders and scholars expect Ramadan to be declared here on Wednesday, March 22.

We'll be bringing you the latest Ramadan 2023 news and updaters, include start times, prayer times and fasting times in the blog below.
