When does Ramadan 2022 start in the UK? Does Ramadan start at different times in other parts of the world such as Saudi Arabia?

Muslims around the globe are set to observe the holy of month of Ramadan which is a period of deep spiritual reflection and fasting that takes place every year. The festival begins with the sighting of the crescent moon, which is typically one night after a new moon.

In the UK 2022, Ramadan is expected to begin on Saturday April 2, though (it could come a day later if the moon isn’t sighted), and end on Sunday, May 1 (when Eid is celebrated). Muslims fast so that they can strengthen their relationship with Allah (or God) and focus more on their faith. Abstaining from food and drink is in keeping with sawm (Arabic for "to refrain"), which is one of the five pillars of Islam. Of the 3,072,500 population of Wales estimates suggest there are around 49,200 Muslims. There are particularly large concentrations in areas of Cardiff such as Butetown and Grangetown which for generations has had a strong Islamic community stemming back to when Cardiff was a bustling coal port.
