Delays on M4, A470 and other major traffic routes as Easter getaway starts - live updates

Queues have started to build on the M4 as drivers pack onto the roads on Good Friday. An estimated 4.62 million journeys are likely to be made across the UK today, with a further 22.48 million across the Bank Holiday weekend in what could be the busiest in years, according to the RAC.

There are also warnings that passengers at airports and train stations will be left waiting for hours in long queues. Many reported hour-long waits at Manchester and Birmingham airports on Thursday, while dozens of British Airways and easyJet flights were cancelled at Heathrow.

Dyfed Powys Police has also stated officers will have an increased presence in anticipation of the Bank Holiday traffic. The force said: "We’re expecting lots of people on the roads this weekend, travelling to #enjoyDPP for the bank holiday. To keep everyone safe there’ll be an increased police presence on roads."

Rail passengers have also been warned of further delays as Network Rail carries out 530 engineering projects costing a total of £83 million over the weekend. These include the closure of the West Coast Main Line between London Euston and Milton Keynes for four days from Good Friday due to upgrades of the existing line and HS2 work.
