Ralf Rangnick sends message to Donny van de Beek over Manchester United future

Ralf Rangnick says Donny van de Beek could still have a future at Manchester United despite a disastrous two seasons.

Van de Beek arrived at United from Ajax in a £40million deal in September 2020 but started four times in the Premier League before he joined Everton on loan for the remainder of the season in January. Van de Beek has missed Everton's last two matches with a thigh problem.

The 24-year-old only started once under Rangnick — in the Champions League dead-rubber against Young Boys — after failing to impress former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and has lost his place in Louis van Gaal's Netherlands squad.

Erik ten Hag, expected to be appointed the United manager ahead of next season, developed Van de Beek into one of the most coveted playmakers in Europe at Ajax and their likely reunion in Manchester could give Van de Beek a lifeline. Although Rangnick restricted Van de Beek to 116 minutes in the 10 games he managed him, he said there is every chance Van de Beek could prolong his United career.

"Why not? But it also depends on the new manager and the way he wants to play and for Donny," Rangnick said. "That is what he told me in conversations we had together. He told me he wants regular game-time to play in the World Cup.

"This needs to be discussed once it’s clear who the new head coach will be and when the process of planning the new squad is in process. I will not be the manager next season. It also depends on how you want to play.

"Do you want to play more possession-based or counter-pressing, pressing kind of football? It depends on that and what other kind of players are coming.
