M60 van driver 'blew three times drink drive limit' after swerving in front of police

A driver of a Vauxhall Vivaro has blew more than three times the legal drink limit after swerving in front of police, say officers.

Greater Manchester Police were following the van driver from junction 13 on the M60 where he was seen veering between lanes. The officers tried to get the driver to pull over but they say he failed to do so for another two junctions. The van was eventually 'boxed in' by police at a roundabout at junction 11 of the same road.

At the roadside breath test, the driver blew 108, said the arresting officers. The legal limit in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

According to road safety charity Brake, you are up to six times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash if you have 50-80mg alcohol per 100ml blood, compared to 0ml. The England and Wales limit is 80mg alcohol per 100ml of blood.

You are also three times more likely to die on the roads if you have 20-50mg alcohol per 100ml of blood, while you are 46 per cent more likely to be at fault in road collisions, if you have just 10mg alcohol per 100ml. If caught to be over the drink-drive limit and/or driving while impaired by alcohol by police, the offender can receive a maximum penalty of six months in prison, an unlimited fine and an automatic driving ban of at least one year.
