Ralf Rangnick: Man Utd fans react to pressing footage from Austria vs Denmark

Ralf Rangnick arrived at Manchester United with a lofty reputation.

The German is known as the ‘Godfather of Gegenpressing’ and is credited of having created the tactic.

The tactic features players immediately attempting to win back possession after losing it, pressing as a team rather than falling back and regrouping.

Rangnick attempted to get United to press when he was appointed interim manager in November 2021.

However, during his six-month tenure at the club, the players failed to buy into the philosophy.

Rangnick left his post in May and was appointed Austria manager.

And footage has emerged which shows that Rangnick has already got his side pressing in the way that he wants to.

Austria hosted Denmark in their UEFA Nations League match on Monday.

Denmark had the ball in the own box and attempted to play out of the back.

Austria had no intention of letting that happen, though, and pressed them intensely.

They managed to knick the ball back when Michael Gregoritsch tackled Kasper Schmeichel.

Marko Arnautović took possession and he pulled the ball back for Xaver Schlager to score. Watch the goal below…

Rangnick has already got Austria pressing the way he wants to within a few weeks of managing them. He failed to do so during his whole tenure at United.
