Ralf Rangnick has made something harder for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United this summer

Manchester United confirmed Ralf Rangnick as interim manager on the 29th of November. Rangnick was unveiled to the media four days later and he spoke well at that first press conference. Rangnick discussed tactics, his vision and the club's history.

The appointment of Rangnick was always going to be an experiment and the journalists that were at his first press conference couldn't help but feel intrigued. Rangnick had said all the right things. He had made a stellar first impression.

"Let the players follow and buy into the idea that I can offer them on how we want to play in the future," Rangnick said. "The major target for me is just to bring more balance to the team. We conceded two goals yesterday and if you look at the total number of goals conceded, it is on average two a game. That is just too much. Those are not the kind of games you need every day."

Rangnick arrived at United having masterminded RB Leipzig's rise through the German football pyramid. Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann had all previously lauded his influence and it was difficult not to listen when Rangnick spoke.

He was good value and was clearly revered by some of Europe's finest coaches. It's just a shame football is about action, not words.

Rangnick has always talked an excellent game but his words have not translated to the pitch at Old Trafford. United have not improved during his tenure and Rangnick has failed at his only remit: to qualify for the Champions League.
