Ralf Rangnick faces tricky selection dilemma after Fred and Scott McTominay injuries

Manchester United are facing an injury crisis in midfield after joined Scott McTominay on the treatment table. The Brazilian limped off during Saturday's meek 1-0 defeat away to relegation-threatened Everton.

Nemanja Matic started the match in McTominay's absence, before Juan Mata was handed his first Premier League minutes of the season. So, with United facing the final fixtures of a demoralising season, who should Ralf Rangnick turn to to partner Matic in the heart of United’s midfield?

Paul Pogba replaced Fred at Goodison Park on Saturday but struggled to get a foothold in the match. Everton’s midfield trio of Allan, Alex Iwobi and Fabian Delph outworked and outfought the Reds.

On his day, Pogba can be scintillating. In the opening fixture of this campaign, the World Cup winner recorded four assists in United’s 5-1 demolition of Leeds at Old Trafford.

Often criticised for a lack of consistency, Pogba’s influence this season is still impressive. The Frenchman has recorded one goal and nine assists in 18 Premier League appearances this season.

But Pogba's key fault, and one which frustrates fans the most is a lack of consistency - not to mention to clear desire to leave. The talent of United’s no.6 is undoubted, but should Ralf Rangnick wish to replace the workaholic, trustworthy Fred, he could choose a more reliable option in his midfield.

Jesse Lingard has hardly featured for United this term and even looked set to leave the club in January. However injuries to Fred and McTominay could see the energetic midfielder given more minutes.
