Rachel Rowe in Rangers fans rallying cry for Celtic clash as she demands more from SWPL promoters

Rachel Rowe is urging Rangers fans to get along to Broadwood for Monday's lunchtime top-of-the-table SWPL clash.

But the Light Blues striker has also asked why more isn’t being done to push the women’s game and keep it in the spotlight. Recent high-profile games have been poorly attended with fewer than 3000 at Hampden for the Old Firm Scottish Cup semi-final nine days ago. And Rowe questioned why Scotland has been left in the slipstream as England and European leagues clock up substantial numbers.

The Wales forward said: “It’s amazing the fans who come. But my question is why aren’t there more fans there? Is it marketing? I can’t give you the answer. We’re grateful for those who come out but we would like more. They make the atmosphere. It’s part and parcel of the game. People shouting, screaming and celebrating together, it’s a massive part of the game. Is it what we are doing externally? We can perform but who is supporting it and who is giving it that space to grow?

“That is a massive thing since I came up here. The league deserves more. How that happens, that isn’t my job to work out but I hope people are fighting for that because this league deserves it, the players deserve it. It’s an amazing league to play in. Give it the proper platform and it will grow. Put it on somewhere and people will watch it – they will come to stadiums and go online to watch games.

“That has to be the first step in trying to make it grow. You have to let people have access to it. I came up a bit naïve to the Scottish league. I didn’t know much about it because it’s not as openly televised or available on other platforms which is a shame. If people get behind it, it will grow. It will.”
