It’s now four World Cups without lifting the trophy for five-time champions Brazil who have not reached the final since beating Germany in 2002. A quarter-final defeat to Belgium in 2018 preceded victory at the 2019 Copa America before finishing runners-up to Argentina in 2021 and an unbeaten qualifying campaign, proving they are still a threat and should not be underestimated.
Head coach Tite announced in February that he will step down after the 2022 World Cup - his 72 matches in charge have resulted in just five defeats (all by a single goal to Argentina three times, Peru and Belgium) and just 25 goals conceded. He has brought in names such as Ederson and Vinicius Junior whilst reignited somewhat stuttering international careers in Casemiro and Roberto Firmino, the latter of whom has scored 13 of his 17 international goals under Tite’s watch.
Tite is likely to stick with a 4-3-3 formation with Neymar playing from the left who, despite being frustrating at times for PSG this season, continues to provide for Brazil (70 goals and 52 assists in 116 caps) and a nation’s hopes will once again be pinned on their star man.
