Purcell ties for seventh as Meronk wins Australian Open

Conor Purcell finished in a tie for seventh as Adrian Meronk holed an eagle on the last to win the ISPS HANDA Australian Open in style.

The Pole closed out his tournament with a sensational long-range eagle putt to finish 14-under-par for the tournament – five shots ahead of overnight leader Adam Scott.

Purcell shot a one-over 71 in challenging conditions to secure the biggest result of his career, with birdies on the first and last holes crucial in securing his five-under total, alongside Matthew Milar and Andrew Martin.

The biggest result of the Portmarnock golfer's career sees him pocket a cheque for over €28,000, making the long trek Down Under well worth his while.

Reigning Irish Open champion Meronk was cool, calm and collected amid the windy conditions in Melbourne, picking up four birdies en route to carding a four-under 66.

Despite taking the lead into Sunday, Scott was ultimately unable to repel Meronk's challenge, sitting on even in the late stages until a double bogey on the 17th killed any hopes of eking out a victory on home soil.

Meronk said: "I'm super excited and to finish like that on the 18th hole is just unreal.

"I’m so grateful, thank you for all the support and I enjoyed this week so much."

Scott said: "It was OK, but never really got it going when I needed to get it going. Adrian played great. He played really good.

"I think the costly part for me today was seven, eight and nine.

"On Thursday I didn’t think I’d make the cut this week so it’s nice to be able to turn it around. It would have been nice to win, but to be honest, I’m looking forward to a couple weeks of not playing golf."
