Punter who won £20,000 with 50p bet to splash out on the naff Bullseye prize no one ever wanted
It was often the "star prize" that no one really wanted on TV's iconic show, Bullseye. In the long-running darts quiz game, hosted by the late Jim Bowen, the naff prizes were a joke which helped create an audience of 20 million viewers at its peak in the 1980s.
They included a speedboat that was once won by a couple from the Midlands who lived in a high-rise flat. But for Derrick Mellor a 54-year-old electrician’s mate from Salford, a speedboat is what he’s always dreamed about.
Now he intends to use some of the £20,000 he won with a 50p stake at his local bookies to get it launched at Anglesey where his family have a static caravan. The father-of-five, who sees himself as something of an action-man that loves the sea, hit the jackpot at his local Betfred shop in Langworthy from a 50p bet on the Irish Lotto.

And now, after all five of his Lucky Dip numbers were drawn, Derrick is planning to join the jet set at Trearddur Bay on the Welsh island. He said: “I only have a kayak and go snorkelling off Anglesey, so I’ve always been a bit jealous of these guys in their speedboats, so now I’m going to join them.
“It really is my dream – and I know the best time to get one is just after Christmas according to a fella who knows about these things in Anglesey. I’m not going to spend a fortune, as I should be able to pick up a decent second-hand one for £5,000 or so.
“I’ve always been into fishing and used to go with my uncle who had a yacht at Pwllheli. We love going to the caravan on weekends and going off snorkelling too. My wife Mary’s up
