Pundits predict difficult Champions League opener for Manchester United vs Bayern Munich

Manchester United make their return to the Champions League tonight after a season out of the competition.

The Reds start off with what is on paper their most difficult fixture of the group stages as they travel to Bayern Munich. Thomas Tuchel's Bundesliga champions have started the season well and boast Harry Kane in their ranks.

United meanwhile have several injuries to contend with. While Mason Mount and Raphael Varane returned to first team training on Tuesday, neither has made the trip to Munich.

With this in mind, three pundits have predicted it could be a difficult evening for the Reds in Germany but there is some optimism to be had. Take a look at their thoughts below.

Speaking on Monday Night's Football Social on the BBC, Sutton said: "Manchester United can only play in essentially one way and that's counter-attack. I don't think they have the players and dynamism in the middle of the park to really get after teams and that causes them a problem.

"I actually give them a chance in Munich because I think Bayern will suit them - come on to them and then United can counter-attack. I think their football and brand of play is Ten Hag's biggest problem."

United's former striker told Genting Casino he fears another bad night for the Reds. Yorke said: "Now United have lost to Brighton, they’ll arrive at Munich with back-to-back defeats - something Bayern will love to take advantage of. Ten Hag will need to get the players’ heads right with this one.
