Pub with free adventure play, stunning views, family walk and next to train station in the Lake District

For families heading to the Lake District for the summer holidays and days out, finding a tranquil pub with a free play area and easy-ish walks nearby is a bit like finding the Holy Grail. But in the village of Oxenholme, on the southern edge of the Lake District we found it.

The Station Inn sits on a hill top with stunning views across the countryside to Kendal. And it's just a couple of minutes walk from Oxenholme Train Station, where there are direct trains to Manchester every hour.

The pub sits right next to The Helm hill. Walk across the road from the pub and you can make a short ascent to the long ridge where you can then get glorious views over Kendal.

Eventually as you walk along, Morecambe Bay comes into view, and the Lake District fells rise in the distance over the hills. What makes it particularly appealing is that this walk is a good one for families - it's a fairly smooth ridge and well-trodden grassy path along the route perfect for little legs.

You can choose a short route across the top or a full circular route taking you back to the pub to refuel. The pub serves a range of hot meals across the day, serving up from 12noon daily.

Think classic pub grub like fish and chips for £14.75, Westmorland Gammon and Egg for £13.95 and Steak and Cumbrian ale pie for £15.95. There's also a kids menu on request too.

For families the big draw here is the huge outdoor play area with lots of seating for the adults and stunning views across the countryside.

The adventure play park has just been refurbished and reopened in April with a range of new play equipment.

It includes swings, wobble board and mini adventure trail
