PSL champions Sundowns suffer heavy home defeat to Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch FC thumped Mamelodi Sundowns 3-0 in a DStv Premiership clash at the Tuks Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon.

The Stellies goals were scored from a brace by Ashley du Preez and a goal from Jayden Adams.

Sundowns have already been crowned league champions, while Stellenbosch are in fifth place on 44 points with one match remaining in the season.

In the sixth minute, Stellenbosch grabbed the lead when Du Preez received a pass to score with a left-footed shot after receiving the ball from Mogamad De Goede, in front of goal, to make it 1-0.

After falling behind early, Sundowns dominated in the ball possession stakes and had a number of goal attempts but failed to put the ball in the Stellenbosch net.

Sundowns' chances fell to the likes of Peter Shalulile, Grant Kekana, Neo Maema and Sphelele Mkhulise, who all missed the target or had their efforts saved by Stellies goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

In the 42nd minute, against the run of play, Stellies scored again when a shot by Adams from outside the box beat 'keeper Ricardo Goss, who was caught off his line, after receiving a pass from Dean van Rooyen to make it 2-0 in favour of the visitors.
