PSG v Real Madrid: When Cristiano Ronaldo scored a 'volley penalty'

As this season’s Champions League enters its last-16 phase, composure becomes all the more crucial for Europe’s biggest stars. One mistake in a knockout tie can prove the difference between success and failure for a side, so errors must be kept to a minimum.

One player that has proved himself a man for the big occasion throughout his career, though, is Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner will be aiming to win the competition for an incredible sixth time this season. His Manchester United side take on Atletico Madrid in the next round, bidding to keep that dream alive for their star man.

However, it was during his time at Real Madrid where Ronaldo really built his legacy in the competition. Winning the trophy on four occasions during his nine seasons with Los Blancos, the dynamic frontman scored a staggering 105 goals in 101 Champions League appearances for the La Liga giants.

Trailing in the first-leg to a goal from PSG’s Adrien Rabiot, Ronaldo stepped up to equalise for Real from the spot at the Bernabeu.

At first glance, the penalty looked like business as usual from Ronaldo, as the ball appeared to have been smashed past a helpless Alphonse Areola in between the sticks.

On further inspection, though, BT Sport noticed that Ronaldo had used his standing foot to bobble the ball up a fraction, essentially creating a ‘volley’ penalty.
