Proteas opener Wolvaardt frustrated with World Cup form: 'I'm just not executing'

Proteas batter Laura Wolvaardt admits South Africa's batting woes have been frustrating in the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup.

South Africa can book a place in the semi-finals if they beat Bangladesh in their final Group A encounter at Newlands on Tuesday.

It's been a see-saw World Cup campaign for the SA women, who have won one of their three T20 games and sit third in the standings.

Throughout the World Cup, the hosts have suffered mini-collapses as they lost wickets at regular intervals, which has put the Proteas' batting line-up, led by Wolvaardt, under pressure.

Wolvaardt, who was promoted up the order as an opener in the T20 tournament, has only scored 50 runs in the three games so far at an average of 16.66.

"It's never nice not making runs, especially at a home tournament. It's supposed to be a very special time for me," Wolvaardt told reporters on Monday.

"To not be making runs is a bit frustrating. But I think at the end of the day, I feel I'm still hitting the ball pretty well in the nets. I just need to stay calm and trust that the runs will come when they need to."

Opening the batting is not unfamiliar territory for Wolvaardt, as she takes on the responsibility in one-day cricket. However, she struggled to get going in the tournament.

With the runs yet to flow for the 23-year-old, Wolvaardt insists she is comfortable opening the batting.

"I open in ODIs and it goes pretty well for me. The plan, initially when they moved me down, was always that I was going to sort of open ... and when I was ready and sort of had developed my skills enough, [I would] move back," she said.
