Princess of Wales presents Carlos Alcaraz with his first Wimbledon championship trophy

Carlos Alcaraz is the new king of Wimbledon after ending the reign of defending champion Novak Djokovic. The Princess of Wales presented Alcarez with his first Wimbledon championship trophy on Sunday (July 16).

The tennis stars’ thrilling five-set match was also watched by the Prince of Wales, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Alcaraz was all smiles in his on-court interview as he remarked on how 'special' it was to play in front of royalty – including King Felipe VI of Spain.

Daniel Craig and Brad Pitt were also among the Centre Court crowd, as Alcaraz won his Men's Singles final match against Novak Djokovic and became the third youngest male winner in the Open era.

In the Player’s Lawn, Kate told Ella Ottaway, who runs the All England Club’s young people programme, that Prince Louis was 'very upset' that he was not attending.

Alcaraz, who has added Wimbledon to his US Open title, said: “Well it’s a dream come true for me. It’s great to win but even if I had lost I would have been really proud of myself, playing a final against a legend of our sport.

“After the first set I thought ‘hmmm… Carlos increase the level’. I have to congratulate Novak. I started playing tennis watching you. When I was born you were already winning tournaments. But 36 is the new 26. It’s amazing.”

Spain’s King Felipe was in the royal box supporting his country’s new star, as Alcaraz added: “It’s special to play here in front of royalty. I am really proud you are here supporting me. You’ve come to watch me twice and I won, so I hope you come some more.”
