Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's first cabinet in full

New Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer today named his first cabinet - with top roles for a number of Greater Manchester MPs.

In his first announcement, Sir Keir appointed Angela Rayner, MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, as Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

Ms Rayner, who was congratulated by former MP Michael Gove, who held the same role for the Tories, was first pick for his new cabinet and was also named Deputy Prime Minister, a role she has held since 2020.

Rachel Reeves, meanwhile, was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, becoming the first woman to take charge of the Treasury. The former Bank of England economist retains the brief she held in the shadow cabinet, as was widely expected.

Ms Reeves said: “It is the honour of my life to have been appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer. Economic growth was the Labour Party’s mission. It is now a national mission. To every young girl and woman reading this, let today show that there should be no limit to your ambitions."

Jonathan Reynolds, MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, was appointed Business and Trade Secretary and the president of the Board of Trade. He, too, held the same role in the shadow cabinet.

And Lisa Nandy, MP for Wigan has been appointed as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

Elsewhere, Yvette Cooper was named Home Secretary, John Healey as Defence Secretary, David Lammy as Foreign Secretary, Wes Streeting as Health Secretary and Shabana Mahmood as Justice Secretary.

Bridget Phillipson was named Education Secretary, Liz Kendall Work and Pensions Secretary and Louise Haigh Transport Secretary, Downing Street said as the announcements were made.
