Premiership clubs 'set' VAR meeting as potential introduction date slated despite spiralling costs

Scottish Premiership clubs will reportedly hold talks over the introduction of VAR on Monday, with a view to introducing the technology while the 2022 World Cup is being played.

A series of refereeing controversies have reignited the debate over the technology, with Rangers manager Gio van Bronckhorst reiterating his support after their draw with Dundee United.

Video replays are available to officials in the English Premier League, as well as Europe's top leagues like the Bundesliga or Serie A.

It's not just the very top of the game though, with the Premiership increasingly becoming an outlier when the Czech Republic, Denmark and Hungary all have VAR.

Fears over cost have delayed the implementation of a video system, but the BBC reports a meeting will be held on Monday to discuss the issue.

A ballot is not expected to be held, with all 42 SPFL clubs needing to agree to the proposals despite the fact it's only likely to be introduced in the top flight.

An official vote is expected before the end of the current season, but VAR would not be in place for the beginning of the new campaign.

Instead it's expected that the technology would come in after the extended winter break for the 2022 World Cup.

But it's not guaranteed clubs will vote for a proposal which could cost £80,000-£100,000 per season.
