Premier League TV rights revolution in sight amid exclusive BT talks to rival Sky Sports

BT have entered exclusive talks with US giant Discovery which herald a revolution in Premier League TV rights.

The partnership is set to get the go-ahead in the coming months after regulatory approval and would bring together BT Sport and Discovery in a deal which would provide a huge new rival to Sky Sports.

BT Sport had been looking to change its set up and sell off part of its business as they have rights to live Premier League and Champions League as well as the Europa League.

Streaming service DAZN had been favourites but now US pay-TV firm Discovery has entered the market and secured a clear run at a new partnership.

It could be a major boost for the Premier League as the value of TV rights remain high, overseas rights are actually increasing and now having BT and Discovery working together could push deals even higher as Sky will be determined to maintain their share.

Marc Allera, the chief executive of BT’s consumer division, said: “The proposed joint venture with Discovery would create an exciting new sports broadcasting entity for the UK and would act as a perfect home for our BT Sport business.

“With a shared ambition for growth, as well as the combination of our world-class sports assets along with Discovery’s premium sports and entertainment content, our customers will benefit from even more content in more places.”

The last TV domestic deal was worth £5billion and it was extended last year on the same terms following the coronavirus pandemic. But it is certain to rise sharply, especially with now increased competition.
