Premier League strike historic TV rights agreement with EFL as lower league clubs in line for £88m bonus

The Premier League and English Football League have reached a deal where they will sell their television rights together for the first time ever.

It is claimed by the Daily Mail that the EFL will also receive 14.75 per cent of their pooled media rights from next season alongside a cool £88million bonus payment for this season. Collective selling is due to start in 2028 after a lengthy stand-off with the Premier League and it is set to become an immediate increase in funding for clubs in the lower divisions.

Exact figures will depend on future TV deals but the 14.75 per cent is likely to DOUBLE the current £130m in solidarity payments which the top table gives to the EFL, "a figure which excludes parachute payments" according to the report. It's a deal that ensures that the funding EFL clubs get is line with the biggest clubs in England. The deal presented right now is exclusive to the collective selling of overseas TV rights from the 2028-29 campaign but it could include domestic TV deals in the future.

The SPFL extended its domestic broadcast deal with Sky Sports until 2029 last year. It bumps coverage of Scottish football matches in the top flight from 48 to 60 and is reportedly worth £150 million.

Total amounts distributed to clubs sees an increase from the previous total of £25 million a season to £30 million. Sky also hold an option to add 10 games each term at a reported cost of £4 million in the deal that begins in 2024.
