Premier League agree major VAR change that will impact Man United and Man City

A major alteration to the handling of offside decisions has been approved by Premier League clubs, with semi-automated technology set to be introduced next season, impacting Manchester United and Manchester City.

The decision was made during the most recent Premier League shareholders' meeting on Friday morning. Clubs unanimously agreed to the change - however, the measure will not be ready for the start of the season.

Instead, the technology is expected to be implemented after one of the Autumn international breaks. This means that clubs may have to wait until September or November for the changes to take effect.

The semi-automated offside technology was used during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and is already being used in UEFA Champions League matches.

In addition to providing greater accuracy in decision-making, it should also significantly improve speed, appeasing players, managers, fans and broadcasters.

On Thursday, the Premier League released a statement saying: "The technology will provide quicker and consistent placement of the virtual offside line - based on optical player tracking - and it will produce high-quality broadcast graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters."

This decision signifies a shift in attitude from Premier League clubs after a prior suggestion of introduction was rejected. The technology will deploy 'limb-tracking' cameras along with a chip in the football to aid in decision-making.
