Rangers have the perfect opportunity to bounce back from their Old Firm battering at the weekend when they travel to Amsterdam to face Ajax in the opening fixture of Group A.

The Gers go into their first appearance in the group stages of this competition for 12 years under a cloud after that demoralising 4-0 drubbing at Celtic Park but their supporters can take solace from their form in Europe over the last 12 months, which has, on the whole, been very impressive.

Gio van Bronckhorst's side have already defeated one giant of Dutch football on their own patch this season - PSV Eindhoven (who beat Ajax in the Dutch Super Cup at the end of July), and they should not fear a trip to Amsterdam despite the hosts flawless start to their domestic campaign.

Understandably, the layers make Ajax warm favourites (9/20 with Betway ) to win this fixture but Rangers have defied the odds enough times in the last 12 months to make their 5/1 odds appealing to many despite their troubled preparation.

Ajax are a perfect five wins from five starts in the Eredivisie under new coach Alfred Schreuder, who took over from Erik ten Hag in the summer. Despite losing big names like Antony, Lisandro Martínez and Sebastien Haller, Ajax have hit the ground running, scoring 16 goals in their five league matches.

Steven Bergwijn, a £28m summer signing from Spurs, has flown out of the blocks for his new club, scoring six goals, including a hat-trick against FC Groningen in the second week of the season.

Ajax won all three of their home games in last year's Champions League, including a 4-0 drubbing of Borussia Dortmund, but they were beaten by
