Power five adrift after opening with 67 in Mexico

Seamus Power backed up his win in Bermuda with a decent opening round at the World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico, though he finds himself five strokes off the lead after a day of low scoring.

The two-time winner on the PGA tour carded a four-under par opening round of 67 at Mayakoba, with five birdies and one bogey.

Beginning on the back nine, Power appeared primed to go low after reaching the turn in 32, with birdies on 10, 13 and 15. Another birdie at the 2nd lifted him to -4 but he immediately gave it back with a dropped stroke on the 3rd and laboured on his way home, though he did manage another birdie at the par-3 8th hole.

Power is five adrift of leader Will Gordon, who carded a stunning round of 62, complete with eight birdies and an eagle, with one dropped stroke tossed in.

Gordon leads by one stroke from Russell Henley, with a bulging chasing pack close at hand. Major winners Francesco Molinari and Danny Willett are close in touch, on seven under and six under respectively, while Ryder Cup star Viktor Hovland also lies on six under after an opening round of 65.
