Portugal manager praises 'ultimate' Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo after two goals

Portugal manager Fernando Santos has lavished praise on Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo.

Although Ronaldo was absent for United's final match of the Premier League season against Crystal Palace due to injury, he was fit enough to report for international duty last week. Portugal drew with Spain on Thursday but secured the three points against Switzerland on Sunday.

Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo started for Portugal as they beat Switzerland 4-0 in Lisbon and the five-time Ballon d'Or winner scored two goals in the match. Ronaldo started on the bench against Spain and he bounced back from that disappointment to score a brace.

Santos' decision to drop Ronaldo from the starting line up for Portugal's match against Spain was controversial. It was naturally a talking point after the fixture, but the 62-year-old was quick to praise the forward for his reaction and his two goals on Sunday night.

“The captain [Ronaldo] is the best in the world. He arrives," Santos said at his press conference.

"When you say he’s the best in the world, how many more words are needed? I’ve said this I don’t know how many times.

“These exhibits are nothing out of the ordinary. Support from fans? He’s captain of the team, he’s the ultimate example.”

Ronaldo made history for Portugal in September by scoring the most international goals in football.
