Poroshenko honors the memory of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes and calls for preserving unity and support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Member of Parliament of Ukraine and leader of the European Solidarity party Petro Poroshenko, together with his wife Maryna Poroshenko, participants of the Revolution of Dignity, MPs from the European Solidarity faction, veterans, diplomats and civic activists, honored the memory of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes, according to a statement published on the European Solidarity website.
“Today is a great day in the history of Ukraine. A day when Ukraine placed the lives of its best heroes on the altar of its future,” Poroshenko said during the commemorative events. According to him, the first protesters came out to the Maidan in November 2013 “to prevent Ukraine’s movement toward Europe from being stopped,” and on December 1 millions of citizens gathered on Independence Square following attempts by the then authorities to suppress the protest.
Poroshenko stressed that one of the goals of the Revolution of Dignity was “to preserve democracy, freedom and the rule of law” and “not to allow Ukraine to be strangled.”
He also emphasized the need to maintain national unity and support the Defense Forces. “We must do everything possible to preserve the unity of the country, because thanks to unity we held Ukraine in 2014 and defended Ukraine and Kyiv in 2022. The threats today are no smaller. We must preserve Ukraine. We must support the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” Poroshenko said.
He separately thanked those present and all participants of the 2013–2014 events, underscoring the importance of safeguarding the state and the values for which sacrifices were made. “We must do everything possible to ensure that the sacrifices made were not in vain,” Poroshenko added.
