Police tape off Barclays as Market Street bank smashed up and covered in paint

A city centre bank has been taped off by police after being covered in paint and having its windows smashed. Police have been in attendance at Barclays, on Market Street, this morning (May 31).

The glass-fronted building has been covered in red paint. Images from the scene show shattered glass on the ground.

Further details about the incident are yet to be confirmed. However, Manchester has seen a number of recent incidents of businesses being targeted by pro-Palestine protesters using red paint in a similar way.

Earlier this month, the front windows of a building on Hardman Street, in Spinningfields, were smashed and covered in red paint. The building is home to both BNY Mellon and Barclays banks.

Palestine Action took responsibility for that incident on May 1, claiming that both banks at the site 'invest in Israel’s largest weapons firm, Elbit Systems'. The Market Street branch of Barclays has also previously been stormed during a pro-Palestine demonstration.

Greater Manchester Police and Barclays have been approached for comment.
