Police stop leads to gun, drugs and 'child neglect' arrests

A '24-hour scene' is in place after a gun, ammunition and class A drugs were discovered in Salford. Officers first spotted a car being driven erratically on Chaddock Lane, Worsley, in the early hours of Friday (April 19).

Greater Manchester Police said the car was stopped and searched, with officers discovering a 'revolver-style firearm' and ammunition. Specialist search teams then descended on a house on Gorton Street, in Eccles.

Police arrived on the scene yesterday (Friday) and are expected to remain there over the next 24 hours. Officers have so far recovered suspected class A drugs and paraphernalia, plus items which can be used to make firearms and ammunition.

GMP says it has 'safeguarded' two 'potentially vulnerable' children as part of the operation.

A man and a woman, both aged 36, have been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm; drugs offences; and child neglect. Witnesses reported seeing Gorton Street 'full of police' as specialist teams descended yesterday, as well as ambulances and fire crews.

A forensics tent was seen in the back garden of the house which has become the centre of police enquiries. Detectives, a specialist search team and tactical aid unit officers remain in attendance today (Saturday).

Residents living close to the scene told the Manchester Evening News the incident was 'worrying when it's on your doorstep'. One said: "It was absolutely full of police last night, the whole road was full from about 9.30am yesterday. It was closed off.

"We’ve no idea what’s gone on and the officers have told us it’s a crime scene... we've not seen anything about what’s happened, they were just here all
