Police send message to festival-goers ahead of Manchester Pride

There will be an increased police presence in the city centre during this weekend's Manchester Pride festival in order to provide "reassurance" Greater Manchester Police (GMP) chiefs say.

Thousands are set to pour into the city centre for this year's edition of Pride, one of the biggest LGBTQ+ celebrations in the country. This year’s Gay Village Party will be headlined throughout the four-day weekend by the likes of Rita Ora, Sugababes and Loreen. Jessie J and Keala Settle are headlining its two stages tonight (Friday).

Ahead of the event, one of GMP's senior officers says they are "well-rehearsed" in policing large scale events such as the festivals and that extra officers will be on patrol in and around the festival site in case of any issues.

Meanwhile, they have urged festival-goers to "have fun, stay safe, and look out for each other." Superintendent Nicola Williams, from our City of Manchester division, said: “This weekend sees the return of the annual Manchester Pride event and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone to our friendly and inclusive city.

"Pride weekend is a time of celebration, education, and embracing diversity, and our officers will be in attendance to ensure everyone can enjoy the event safely.

"We facilitate large-scale operations week in, week out, across Manchester and with our partners, we are well rehearsed in running events like this.
