Police powers to be stepped up ahead of 'protests' at Salford Precinct

Police powers are set to be stepped up in Salford this afternoon ahead of a potential 'protest'.

There are reports on social media of people gathering at Salford precinct from 1pm today (August 6), with fears of a potential disorder. Shops in the precinct are reportedly closing early today with staff being sent home.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed officers were aware of the planned 'protest'. An order is set to be put in place around the precinct which will allow for stepped-up police powers.

Full details on the order are expected to be released soon. This comes amid widespread violent disorder and rioting across the UK in recent days, since three little girls were killed in Southport.

Unrest has been witnessed across much of England and in parts of Northern Ireland. In Greater Manchester last weekend, scenes of violent disorder unfolded in Manchester city centre and in Bolton, with missiles thrown at police and scuffles breaking out between rival protest groups.
