Police extend stop and search powers in Moss Side following fatal stabbing earlier this month

Police have extended stop and search powers around the Moss Side area for another 24 hours following a fatal stabbing earlier this month. A 20-year-old man tragically died in hospital of stab injuries and a group of men were also left injured in the early hours of August 15.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police announced they had the powers to carry out ‘targeted stop and searches’ in and around Moss Side on Sunday (August 28). However, the force has said it will be extending those powers and patrols in the area for another day, until Tuesday (August 30.)

The Section 60 powers are in place to help prevent violence and keep the community safe, police have said. More officers have also been deployed to the area to increase the police presence.

On Sunday, Superintendent Phil Spurgeon of GMP’s City of Manchester district, said: "We've made the decision to authorise Section 60 powers today to help prevent violence and keep people safe.

"Alongside increased stop searches, we have deployed extra uniformed and non-uniformed officers. I would like to use this opportunity to appeal to parents/carers to talk to young people about their plans for the weekend to ensure they are both safe and legal.

"GMP will not tolerate violent crime - preventing and reducing it is one of our highest priorities." Under Section 60, officers can stop searching anyone in a defined area within a specific timeframe.

The boundary encompasses part of Mancunian Way, neat the city centre, Hulme, Moss Side and part of Whalley Range. Greenheys and the border with Rusholme are also part of the stop and search area.
