Police cordoned off area of Cardiff after suspicious item found

Emergency services cordoned off an area of Cardiff following the discovery of a "suspicious item" that turned out to be a gas cylinder. A bomb squad was called to Titan Road, Splott, where the market used to be, but roads have reopened.

A spokesman for the force said on Tuesday afternoon: "A cordon has been enforced and road closures are in place around the area and motorists are advised to take alternative routes."

But in an update in the evening the force said: "This incident in Splott has concluded safely and the roads have now reopened. The item has been confirmed as a gas cylinder."

Resident Gareth Fox, who was evacuated from his home, said in the afternoon: "I was told I had to leave my flat because they’d found a World War Two bomb whilst digging."
