Cardiff City 1-0 Millwall: Goutas header gets Bluebirds back to winning ways

Dimitrios Goutas' late header salvaged a much-needed win for Cardiff City in a dire game against Millwall.

The game was a tough watch and you felt it was going to take either a moment of brilliance or a mistake for there to be a winner. Well, Goutas' headed effort was tame and, it must be said, Matija Sarkic should have done better to keep it out.

Cardiff won't care, though, after back-to-back defeats, they sorely needed three points on the board in order to edge them closer to those top-six spots. And they did just that.

The less said about the first half, the better, really. It was an awful watch. A really dire 45 minutes with a painful dearth of quality from both sides, who proceeded to gift possession to one another at will. Sign up to our Cardiff City newsletter here.

It looked like two poor Championship sides trying to play styles of football which were completely alien to them and doing so with very, very little success.

Cardiff failed to register a meaningful shot on the Millwall goal before the break, while the visitors tested Alex Runarsson for the first time in the 45th minute, with Kevin Nisbet latching on to the end of a cross to poke an effort on goal. The Iceland international dived to his left to keep the shot out and the score level as referee Andrew Kitchen blew the whistle for half time. Groans rang out around Cardiff City Stadium and you could hardly blame the paying public after that showing, from both teams.
