Police cordon off main road amid reports of person struck in 'hit and run'

Police cordoned off a main road in Openshaw on Wednesday night (October 11) amid reports of a person being struck by a car.

The incident sparked a huge emergency services response, including police and paramedics, on Ashton Old Road (A635). There are unconfirmed reports it was a 'hit and run.'

Witnesses have told the Manchester Evening News that a person was struck by a vehicle, with others describing the dramatic scenes as they saw a person lying in the road.

Ashton Old Road was cordoned off in both directions between Cornwall Street to Lees Street for a number of hours amid investigations. There was another road closure on Lees Street with a heavy police presence also at the scene.

Pictures taken on Wednesday night (October 11) show a number of police vehicles in attendance with tape blocking off the main road beside the Morrisons petrol station and a local convenience store as officers carried out enquiries.

One person, who did not wish to be named, said: "I was walking to Morrisons with my little girl in her pram and by the time I got out and back onto the street, there was ambulance and a person on the floor."

Live updates, according to AA, said the collision had first been reported at around 8pm. The typically busy road was blocked off until around 10.30pm.

The nature of any injuries sustained or further details about the incident have not yet been confirmed by Greater Manchester Police, who have been contacted for more information.
