Police confirm why M4 was closed in both directions

Police have explained why the M4 was closed in both directions between Junction 25A to J26 tonight. Traffic monitoring system Inrix said traffic was stopped completely from the Newport/Cwmbran turn off to the A4051, Malpas Road.

Gwent Police went on to confirm that J25a and J26 westbound J26 eastbound were shut and have since been reopened.

A spokesperson confirmed why the closure took place: "We received a call regarding the concern for safety of a 17-year-old girl at around 6.55pm on Saturday 19 July.

"Officers and personnel from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended and brought the girl to safety."
