Police car ploughs through wall at funeral directors while responding to 999 call as officer rushed to hospital

A police car was ploughed through a wall at a funeral directors in West Timperley on Wednesday afternoon (August 14) while responding to a 999 call.

The vehicle, which is thought to have narrowly avoided another car, then smashed into the wall, which was sent crumbling to the ground outside the Arthur Gresty Funeral Homes and Memorial Specialist building on Manchester Road.

Pictures from the scene showed how the police car, which had been on a grade one emergency call at the time, had landed in the grounds of the funeral directors.

The brick wall was left badly damaged, as was a large sign outside the premises. Witnesses could be seen stood on the pavement outside as police officers and paramedics attended.

Greater Manchester Police said another vehicle is believed to have 'swerved' in front of the police car, with the driver having to take 'evasive action' to avoid hitting members of the public.

A male officer was taken to hospital from the scene with injuries that are not described as life-threatening or life-changing.

A spokesperson for the force said: "At 3:30pm this afternoon, police were responding to a Grade 1 priority call on blue lights, travelling on Manchester Road in West Timperley.

"It’s believed that a car swerved in front of the police car. The police car took evasive action to avoid colliding with any members of the public which resulted in the collision into the wall.

"An officer has been taken to hospital for further treatment but thankfully his injuries are not believed to be life threatening or life changing."
