Police are investigating 'unsolicited explicit images and messages' sent to MPs

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed they are investigating unsolicited explicit images and messages sent to MPs in a parliamentary 'honeytrap sexting scam.'

It comes after Hazel Grove Conservative MP William Wragg revealed he was blackmailed into sharing his colleagues’ phone numbers for fear of intimate images of him being leaked.

The reports of explicit images and flirtatious messages being sent to MPs as part of the alleged sexting scam were called “extremely troubling” by Treasury minister Gareth Davies on Friday (April 5).

A statement from the Metropolitan Police read: “Officers from the Met’s Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command are carrying out an investigation following reports that a number of unsolicited messages were sent to MPs over recent months.

“We are working closely with other forces and are in contact with colleagues in Parliamentary Security, who are providing support and advice around anyone affected.”

Mr Wragg said on Thursday he was 'manipulated' into giving the personal phone numbers of colleagues to a man he met on a gay dating app. He told the Times he was 'scared' because the man had compromising information on him.

The MP for Hazel Grove said he was sorry for his 'weakness', which has caused hurt to other people.

On Friday, Scotland Yard confirmed it was in contact with Leicestershire Police and Parliamentary Security “following reporting of unsolicited messages to members of Parliament”, amid concerns other MPs and their staff could be victims of blackmail. “We will assess any reports made to us accordingly,” the Met added.
