Poetry in motion: Sundowns put four past dreadful Arrows to maintain perfect PSL start

It was a flawless night for defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns as they maintained their perfect start to the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season, thrashing Golden Arrows 4-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday.

Goals from Peter Shalulile, Grant Kekana and a brace from Lesibe Nku, saw the Brazilians put in a stunning football display in Pretoria, solidify their place at the summit of the league standings with nine points.

It was Sundowns’ fourth match of the season, as they defeated Moroka Swallows three days prior, beating Steve Komphela’s charges in the MTN8 quarter-final to set up a mouth-watering semi-final bout against Kaizer Chiefs in early September.

Sundowns' fluidity showed that playing every three to four days is helping Rhulani Mokwena’s charges find their rhythm, despite it being the third week of the season.

Meanwhile, Arrows have had seven days of rest but fell back down to earth after earning a win against Richards Bay last Tuesday before their draw against Swallows in the opening weekend of the Premier Soccer League season.

Five minutes into the first half, possession tilted into Sundowns’ favour by a massive 76% to Arrows’ 24%, which already showed both sides’ intent. Arrows were happily putting all eleven jerseys behind the ball, parking the bus with Sundowns probing all over the field.

Arthur Zwane and Marcelo Allende enjoyed moving throughout different sections of the opponents’ defence, seeking and creating opportunities for Sundowns. Rivaldo Coetzee, who returned from suspension into the starting eleven, came narrowly close to scoring from an Allende corner.
