'Plenty of players with more talent' - Wout Weghorst's former coach makes admission about Man United loanee

Wout Weghorst's former coach, John van den Brom, backs the centre-forward despite Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag dropping him recently.

The Burnley loanee started all of United's first 19 matches since signing during the January transfer window before the streak broke by being named on the bench against Brentford a week ago. After returning to winning ways without Weghorst, the striker also started as a substitute versus Everton and only featured as once it was clear Marcus Rashford could not continue.

Van den Brom, who currently manages Polish champions Lech Poznan, coached the centre-forward for two seasons at AZ Alkmaar in the player's native Netherlands. The Dutch coach still respects Weghorst and the work ethic that fuelled this rise to the Premier League.

“Believe me; he didn’t expect (a move to United) either. I think Wout is also honest enough to admit that,” Van den Brom told Voetbal Nieuws, relayed by Soccer News and translated by Sport Witness. “Wout is still the same. I messaged him after his transfer to Manchester United. He responded right away. Those are nice things.

“We must not forget that if you keep working on yourself and investing in your career, both on and off the field, you will see that it can lead somewhere. He got the most out of it every day. Plenty of players with more talent or quality don’t get the most out of it. Wout knows very well what he can do and also what he is less good at. He tries to disguise this by always working hard. As a result, he always remains upright with his mentality. I have a lot of respect for him.

“A lot of the players I’ve worked with have turned out well. You know what they did for it.
