Pirates claim unprecedented MTN8 three-peat, breaking Stellenbosch hearts in dramatic fashion

Orlando Pirates ascended into football's pantheon at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, clinching an unprecedented third consecutive MTN8 title with a 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC.

Beneath the Durban skies, the Buccaneers etched their name into the record books.

It was a triumph orchestrated by their Spanish head coach Jose Riveiro, who arrived in 2022, largely unknown to South African football.

But the 47-year-old Riveiro has now collected an impressive five trophies with the Buccaneers - three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cup crowns - adding to his growing reputation.

Saturday's final, his 95th match in charge, only solidified his status, with a record of 58 wins, 20 losses, and 17 draws, giving him a winning percentage of over 61%.

His initial anonymity in Soweto has long since faded as his tactical acumen continues to deliver silverware.

Goals from Monnapule Saleng, Tshegofatso Mabasa, and teenage sensation Relebohile Mofokeng guided the Buccaneers to the promised land after Lehlogonolo Mojela had given Stellies an early lead, but Pirates, who've turned KwaZulu-Natal into their fortress in MTN8 finals, roared back emphatically.

However, the win was not without controversy.

A crucial refereeing error by Abongile Tom in the lead-up to Pirates' second goal in stoppage time has left a shadow over what would otherwise have been a flawless achievement.

Despite this, the Buccaneers' dominance in the MTN8 tournament over the past three years remains a remarkable feat, further solidifying their legacy in South African football.
