Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang failed to live up to Arsenal promise after Barcelona transfer

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's nightmare at Arsenal is now over.

The 32-year-old striker has now moved to Barcelona after the Gunners agreed to terminate his contract, despite there still being 18 months left to run on his deal at the Emirates Stadium.

Aubameyang was stripped of the captain's armband at Arsenal towards the end of last year after the Gabon international was penalised by Mikel Arteta for disciplinary issue.

His career at Arsenal promised so much, and all in all, the striker did deliver. Aubameyang's record of 92 goals and 21 assists in 163 appearances is definitely not one to be sniffed at.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker won just one major honour during his four-year stay with the Gunners - the FA Cup in the 2019/20 season - where he scored a brace at Wembley to help the north Londoners beat Chelsea 2-1.

Overall, Aubameyang's personal record at Arsenal can be considered a success, but ever since he signed a new three-year contract with the club in September 2020, the truth is, he's never been the same player.

When he agreed the extension, Aubameyang pledged that he will help Arsenal "achieve big things together" and that the "best was yet to come" for the north London club. But that has not proved to be the case.

He said: "Signing for this special club was never in doubt. It is thanks to our fans, my team-mates, my family and everybody at this club that I feel like I belong here.

"I believe in Arsenal. We can achieve big things together. We have something exciting here and I believe the best is to come for Arsenal."

These comments at the time will have excited Arsenal supporters, as well as their star player committing his future to the club, but since then, it's been downhill for Aubameyang.
