Philadelphia Eagles guard Brandon Brooks retires from NFL after recent injury-plagued seasons

Philadelphia Eagles guard Brandon Brooks announced his retirement Wednesday, ending a 10-year NFL career that was cut short by injuries in recent seasons.

Brooks, 32, said Wednesday it was «the right time» to retire. After appearing in only two games since the end of the 2019 season, he said «my body was telling me» to end his career.

A three-time Pro Bowler during his six seasons with Philadelphia, Brooks was an anchor on the Eagles team that won the franchise's first Super Bowl after the 2017 season.

But Brooks was plagued by multiple injuries over the last two years; he missed the entire 2020 season because of a torn Achilles tendon and suffered a season-ending pectoral injury in Week 2 of this past season.

The Eagles recently had reworked Brooks' contract, possibly in anticipation of Wednesday's announcement, to reduce his 2022 guaranteed salary and create $12.38 million in salary cap space, a league source told ESPN's Field Yates.

Brooks was a third-round draft selection of the Texans in 2012 and played four seasons with Houston before signing a five-year deal with Philadelphia in 2016.
