Phil Hay: Leeds set to seal "bargain" 7th signing today, he won't cost Radz a penny - opinion
Leeds United are set to seal their seventh signing of the summer transfer window today, according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay…
The ever-reliable journalist claims that the Whites are set to confirm the arrival of goalkeeper Joel Robles, who has agreed on a one-year contract at Elland Road to provide more valuable backup to first-choice glovesman, Illan Meslier.
The 32-year-old is available on a free transfer after leaving Real Betis at the end of his four-year contract. He is now set to be available, pending a medical, for the Yorkshiremen’s trip to Southampton next weekend.
Robles was once on the books at Premier League rivals Everton and he has featured 51 times in the English top-flight.
There has been a void of veteran experience between the sticks for Leeds all summer after Kiko Casilla sealed a long-awaited exit. He and the club agreed to cancel his contract a year before it was due to expire.
That gap is now set to be filled by Robles, who has been something of a career backup and that’s not a bad thing as he has certainly been good at his job, to be trusted by the Toffees, Atletico Madrid and more recently, Betis.
During the 2016/17 campaign, the Spaniard actually managed to play 20 times for the Merseyside outfit and he kept a clean sheet in ten of those, as per Transfermarkt.
That’s more than what Meslier managed last campaign (five clean sheets) and only one fewer than a season earlier (11).
Robles isn’t expected to earn much either, considering he was raking in around £12k-per-week at the LaLiga outfit, some £28k-per-week more than his disgraced countryman, so he’ll be something of a steal and will free up some money to spend in other areas of the squad, such as upfront.
