Phil Foden can kick-start his Man City season if he bucks Manchester United trend

Phil Foden has started all seven of Manchester City's Premier League matches this season, but he will be the first to admit that he has not quite lived up to his exceptionally high standards.

That isn't to say that the City academy graduate has been bad, or even sub-par - just that he has been a little inconsistent. A return of two goals and two assists so far - as well as a goal in City's Champions League defeat of Sevilla - is not bad at all, but earlier this month Pep Guardiola did admit that in the opening matches of the campaign Foden was not at his best.

Foden has spent the past week and a half on international duty with the England squad; he started both England's 0-1 defeat to Italy and the 3-3 draw with Germany. What better way to get back into the swing of club football than by dropping a big performance in the Manchester derby, one of the most important matches of the season?

As a childhood City fan, there are surely few games Foden will relish more than facing up to Manchester United. After all, playing for City and scoring against the neighbours are the two things most City fans dream of growing up.

However, in the case of the latter of those two things, the dream has yet to become a reality. Since making his senior City debut in 2017 Foden has faced United seven times., but he is yet to register a goal or an assist against them.

In fairness, his early appearances tended to be short cameos. He came off the bench in the dying moments of a 3-1 defeat of United at the Etihad in November 2018, as was the case in the League Cup semi-final win at Old Trafford in January 2020.
