Peter Schmeichel sends warning to Christian Eriksen following move to Manchester United

Goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel has told Christian Eriksen that Manchester United fans only have a limited amount of patience if results don't go their way.

The former Old Trafford No.1 called Eriksen a “class player” and said he is good enough to become a “superstar” under Erik ten Hag. The ex-Tottenham and Brentford playmaker signed for United on a three-year deal last week.

Like fellow new arrival Lisandro Martinez, the Dane will not join his new teammates on the Australia leg of their pre-season tour but is expected to play some role in the Atletico Madrid friendly clash in Norway on July 30.

Eriksen knows what it takes to win silverware having won three Dutch titles at Ajax and a Serie A trophy at Inter Milan. But Schmeichel says there’s a different kind of pressure at United.

“Christian Eriksen does not expect greater pressure than other new players - but you do not know what the pressure is at Manchester United until you have tried it,” he told Tipsbladet.

“The expectation is that you win every time. You have to do your best in every single match.”

Schmeichel said that Eriksen should be prepared to shoulder the pressure from United supporters if results aren't sealed, though he suggested the 30-year-old will be able to cope.

“The fans are patient but have a limit and when it is reached it creates a pressure,” he added. “The pressure is higher when you are not winning at United than it is elsewhere.

“You have to learn to live with the huge pressure that is on your performance. I have seen several talented footballers come to United without being able to cope with the pressure.”
