Peter Schmeichel leaves pundits in stitches by claiming Man Utd can win Champions League
Peter Schmeichel amused his fellow CBS Sports pundits by insisting that Manchester United can win the Champions League this season.
United have been inconsistent and unconvincing under the management of Ralf Rangnick and his predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the 2021-22 campaign so far.
However, the Red Devils managed to top a Champions League group containing Villarreal, Atalanta and Young Boys and face Atletico Madrid, who haven’t been at their best this season either, in the Round of 16.
Rangnick’s side also leapfrogged West Ham to fourth in the Premier League table on Tuesday night thanks to a 2-0 victory over Brighton at Old Trafford.
Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes earned United their third league win of 2022.
However, United currently look miles behind the likes of Manchester City, who thrashed Sporting Lisbon 5-0 on Tuesday, and Paris Saint-Germain, who outplayed Real Madrid at the Parc Des Princes before Kylian Mbappe scored the winning goal at the death.
According to FiveThirtyEight, United have less than a one per cent chance of lifting the European Cup this season.
But legendary goalkeeper Schmeichel is still convinced that his former club can spring a major shock by going all the way.
Micah Richards asked: “Peter: do you honestly believe that Man United can win the Champions League? Be honest with me now. No messing around…”
After a long pause, Schmeichel said: “Yes!”
As Richards, Jamie Carragher, Thierry Henry and even the presenter fell about laughing, Schmeichel added: “What kind of a question is that?”
Carragher replied: “What kind of answer is that?!”
