Peter Schmeichel heaps praise on 'majestic' Manchester United player who was decisive in win vs Fulham

Peter Schmeichel insists Manchester United would not have beaten Fulham were it not for the 'majestic' Harry Maguire.

United came through a tough away trip at Craven Cottage with all three points on Saturday after Bruno Fernandes' added-time winner. Erik ten Hag's side were far from perfect but were able to build on a hard-fought clean sheet, for which Maguire was pivotal.

The 30-year-old suffered a blow to the head inside the opening minutes but after passing concussion protocols, produced another excellent display at the back. Despite also going down with a hand injury, he played the full 90 minutes and was central to the victory.

“The best player for me today was Harry Maguire," Schmeichel told Premier League Productions. "He was majestic. He was here, there and everywhere. The adversity he has met and the criticism he has been in for and how he has turned it around.

“Every coach now will put him in first. He was fantastic and without him today I can’t see how Man United would have won today.”

Following consecutive 3-0 home defeats in the past week, victory was all that mattered for United on Saturday but Ten Hag's side were far from their best. They were able to build on a more stable defensive performance but continued to frustrate in attack, with Antony woeful and Rasmus Hojlund starved of service.

But Schmeichel hopes that the win, whatever the circumstances, is the key takeaway and hopes it can build momentum going into another crucial week before the November international break.
