Peter Schmeichel explains why Manchester United should continue backing Erik ten Hag

Legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel wants the club to stick with manager Erik ten Hag, insisting the club needs a sense of consistency.

The Dutchman is under mounting pressure at Old Trafford after Sunday's 0-0 draw with Aston Villa marked a fifth game in all competitions without a victory.

Furthermore, the stalemate with Villa - another of Schmeichel's former clubs - marked a third successive Premier League game without a goal.

United are currently 14th in the Premier League table after winning just two of their opening seven matches this season, scoring a paltry five goals in the process. They have also failed to win either of their opening two Europa League fixtures, drawing with both FC Twente (1-1) and FC Porto (3-3).

Despite ever-increasing pressure and frustrations being vented at Ten Hag, Schmeichel, who embraced the United manager ahead of the clash with Villa, is still backing him to remain in charge, insisting it is too early for a change to be considered.

Schmeichel, appearing on the Seaman Says podcast, said: "Erik ten Hag is still the manager and I will support him because I want the club to do well. I don't want United to be the club that changes the manager all the time.

"I hope they stick with Erik because we need consistency now. Let him have a fair go at this.

"He's been hampered by a lot of things over the last two years, now he's got his own players, let him show us what the plan is and what he can do with the football club. If that doesn't work then maybe then we talk about a change."
