Peter Schmeichel 'buzzing' at Kasper's Celtic transfer as Man Utd legend set to become Parkhead regular

Peter Schmeichel is about to become a regular day tripper to Glasgow.

And, every now and then – as was the case on Sunday – he might even be spotted in the east end of the city, watching his son add a silver lining to his own career as one of the most recognisable goalkeepers in European football. Most of the time, though, the former Manchester United colossus will be working on his handicap on some of the country’s top golf courses - as an unexpected perk of his boy’s new job.

These days Schmeichel senior earns his corn as a TV pundit with American broadcast giants CBS but the 60-year-old has been busy punching holes in his schedule ever since the ink dried on Schmeichel junior’s one year Celtic contract. “He was buzzing,” grinned Kasper when asked how his father took the news of his summer switch to Scotland. He went on: “He sees a lot of trips to watch games and go out for golf days!

"He works for the American broadcasters who do the Champions League, so he’s been to Celtic Park a few times particularly on European nights and he says it’s special. I haven’t been here myself on a European night, I played here myself in a friendly and I snuck myself in once for an Old Firm game when I played for Falkirk, so I have experienced that. I can’t remember the score - it was 18 years ago after all - but, yes, I was in the Celtic end!”

There is certainly a touch of the football royalty where this family is concerned and, fresh from his coronation as Joe Hart’s successor in Sunday’s 4-0 opening day romp over Kilmarnock, Schmeichel is already hankering after the pomp and ceremony of Champions League nights under the lights.
